Brisbane doctor caught speeding in Clem7, Airport Link tunnels

A Brisbane magistrate has questioned a doctor’s excuses for speeding through the city’s tunnels six times in two weeks, adding she was ‘shocked’ by how much he would have to pay in fines.

Brisbane Magistrates Court today heard Philip Andrews, 51, was caught speeding six times in the Clem Jones and Airport Link tunnels over a two-week period.

Andrews pleaded guilty to travelling at 90km on three occasions and at 100km twice through the tunnels, which are 80km/h zones, earlier this year.

Andrews said at the time he had just started at a private practice and was under a lot of stress.

“I was thinking about getting to the clients and not really thinking about the consequences of my behaviour,” he said.

On four occasions Andrews had been speeding in his motorcycle and the others in a car.

Magistrate Sue Ganasan said Andrews had similar offences from 2019 and 2018.

“I accept on a very limited basis that it‘s connected to your stress, but I think there’s something a bit more that you need to look into,” she said.

Ms Ganasan did not calculate the total fine amount saying she was “too shocked” by the sum.

“I did not do the exercise of adding up all the amounts because I thought I would be too shocked as an individual, and you certainly should be, which is why I‘m asking you to take it seriously,” she said.

The total fine plus court costs came to $2,226.
