A young child was among the four passengers put at risk as a drunk driver swerved between two lanes of traffic, a court was told.

TOO many bevies at a gender reveal party culminated in a dangerous trek across local roads.

After consuming four whiskeys, Abraham Taylor didn’t trust his sober passengers enough to take the wheel.

The 28-year-old took it upon himself to drive despite being more than three times the legal limit.

Taylor pleaded guilty at Richlands Magistrates Court on Friday to driving under the influence of liquor and driving without a licence.

The court heard Taylor was seen driving on Compton Rd in Calamvale about 9pm on April 18, he swerving between different lanes.

Four others were in the car at the time.

Taylor returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.153 per cent.

Checks on his licence revealed it had expired.

He told police he had consumed alcohol at a party celebrating the gender of his friend’s baby.

Defence lawyer Jacilynn Young told the court Taylor did not trust anyone else at the time to drive the child home.

She said her client, who had a two-year-old daughter and a baby on the way, had cooperated with police during the incident.

Magistrate Stuart Shearer said Taylor had a number of convictions for driving offences despite never holding anything more than a learners’ permit.

He told Taylor the criminality of his actions had increased over the years.

“It’s very clear the previous sentences were of no deterrent value whatsoever,” Magistrate Shearer said.

“The risk you posed to yourself, but more importantly to the child, the other people in the car and every other road user on the road at the time, was an extreme risk.”

Taylor received six months’ jail and was disqualified from driving for three years.

He will be eligible on September 23.
