A man has been charged over the theft of an Australian Defence Force vehicle which was found dumped in Brisbane covered in graffiti.

Police will allege about 2.25am on July 18, Xavier Dean Filgate, 26, gained access to Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera and stole a 40M truck.

Filgate allegedly drove it a short distance to Tel El Kebir St in Mitchelton and abandoned it.

The truck – which police will allege was stolen on the night of the State of Origin decider – was found covered in graffiti, including “go QLD” and “f**k NSW”.

The word “thanks” was also sprayed across the front of the truck, and “party bus get on” was sprayed across the back.

Following a joint investigation by Queensland Police and Victoria Police, the Keperra man was arrested at a home in Bendigo.

Filgate’s matter was mentioned in Brisbane Arrest Court on Saturday, July 27. The charges were adjourned to August 7 and Filgate was remanded in custody.

A Defence spokesman said the security measures at the Enoggera barracks were being investigated.

“Defence can confirm a military Rheinmetall 40 M truck was stolen from Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera. Queensland Police advised the vehicle was found abandoned in the carpark of the Mitchelton Youth Centre on the morning of July 18, 2024,” a spokesman said.

“Defence is conducting a separate investigation into security arrangements as a priority.

“As the matter is under investigation, Defence is unable to provide further details about the incident at this time.”
