Tributes have begun to flow for Chloe Jade Mason, also known as “CJ”, who was allegedly chased by two men and shot in a suburban street in Caboolture.
The 23-year-old’s sister Danni Mason has remembered her as a beautiful young woman.
“Chloe was a beautiful 23-year-old who was loved by many. She was a daughter, a sister, an aunt and a friend,” Ms Mason said in a statement given to The Courier-Mail.
“This loss has devastated our family and we struggle to come to terms with this so close to the holidays.
“As sisters we grieve for the things she won’t experience, all the things we aren’t able to share and the memories we won’t make. She was an incredible woman.”
Another sister, Hannah McKone, has started a fundraiser.
“I’m fund raising on behalf of my little sister Chloe,” the GoFundMe said.
“Being so close to Christmas her family has no savings or financial means to give her a funeral.
“We are graciously asking for help and support in this. All funds donated will be directly utilised for Chloe’s funeral service.”
In a separate post on Facebook Ms McKone further paid tribute to her sister and grieved the life she “never got to have”.
“Grieving the life you never got to have and the experiences we didn’t get the chance to share,” she said.
“You would’ve been the most amazing mother.”
Police were called to Railway Parade about 12.10am after a 23-year-old woman was found unconscious and not breathing outside a property. Police provided CPR and first aid but she was declared dead at the scene.
Detective Inspector David Harbison on Sunday said police believe the woman, from the Caboolture area, had been shot by two men and said they were treating the matter as a homicide.
Detectives do not believe the incident to be a random attack and said inquiries indicate those involved were known to each other.
“Police are investigating reports of up to three to four shots fired in that street,” Det Insp Harbison said.
“Early investigations indicate the deceased was assaulted by two male persons who may have chased her down Railway Parade. During that assault the deceased received a gunshot wound.
“Police and forensic officers remain at the scene conducting investigations and inquiries, whilst the public nature of this crime is alarming, police do not believe this to be a random attack.
“I want to reassure the public that a dedicated task force of local detectives along with specialist homicide detectives have been deployed to investigate this crime, the goal will be to bring the persons responsible to justice as quickly as possible.”
Friends and family of Ms Mason have also taken to social media to pay tribute.
“She was only 23 and stunning. My daughter went to school with her and played rugby league with her at Beachmere when they were younger. So sad,” one social post said.
Another commenter said “RIP Beautiful woman I am thankful to have been friends with you in high school. You will be dearly missed”.
“My big sister I am actually lost for words. Rest in Peace … I’m in shock,” another post said.
Det Insp Harbison has urged the two men who are allegedly involved in the incident to come forward and “do the right thing”, as well as members of the community who know the men.
The woman did not reside at any of the nearby properties and police are inquiring why she was in the area at the time.
“It doesn’t involve the actual property itself, we understand it occurred in the street and went onto the footpath of that property in question – the actual property where it occurred isn’t involved in the actual investigation,” he said.
“It is a tragedy to lose a young life in such a violent manner so we will get to the bottom of it, that’s the best thing we can do for the family at the moment.”
A nearby resident told The Courier-Mail she heard a voice yelling “f**king c**t” around the time of the alleged shooting.
A man who lives across the road from the property where the woman was found said he came home about 6am to find police there.
Officers on Sunday morning could be seen searching a property across the street from the Railway Parade home.
Det Insp Harbison said police were appealing to any members of the public in the area of Railway Pde just before midnight who may have witnessed any suspicious activity on the street, or have dashcam footage to come forward.
He added police have a number of witnesses who are assisting police, however no persons are in custody at this stage and there are currently no suspects.
No weapons have been located, investigations are ongoing and no charges have been laid.
Police have now established Operation Whiskey Cortland with assistance from the Homicide Investigation Unit to look into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Investigators urge anyone that may have information in relation to this incident to contact police, particularly, anyone travelling along Railway Parade from 11.40pm Saturday, December 21 to shortly thereafter with dashcam.
