Wieambilla resident Keven Gill says bullet was fired at his feet

A man who lives less than one kilometre from the property where two police officers and another neighbour were killed on Monday night has spoken of a frightening incident just weeks ago.

Female cop killer’s sickening final moments

A Wieambilla resident, who lives within a kilometre of the Train family has spoken of the frightening moment a single bullet was fired at his feet, just two weeks before Constable Matthew Arnold, Constable Rachel McCrow and his neighbour Alan Dare were fatally ambushed.

Keven Gill said his property on Mary St at Wieambilla intersects with Wains Rd and the Train property was “less than 600 metres away”.

Mr Gill said on Friday, December 2, he was forced to call local police after a single bullet was fired from the nearby creek.

“I was standing up near the shed and then all of a sudden I could see my own dog with her tail zigzagging between her legs – a bullet went straight past me,” he said.

“I don’t know whether (the person) who fired the bullet was trying to scare me or shoot the dog.”

Mr Gill said the bullet that was fired came from the nearby creek, the Trains’ property.

He said that at the end of winter more than half of his sheep were “wiped out” by three wild dogs.

“I came home one day to find three dogs feasting on my sheep – they were wild dogs, a Wolfhound Bullmastiff mix, but I noticed that one of the dogs had a coat on as if a neighbour had been looking after it,” Mr Gill said.

Mr Gill said that dog tracks led to the “gangway” of the Train property and that he spoke to council about whether he was able to poison the lethal dogs.

“I killed two of them and then my own dog killed the other,” he said.

Asked whether he thought the single bullet fired was a “message”, Mr Gill said “in hindsight – yes”.

Mr Gill said he was out of town on Monday but whenever he was at the property, he would keep to himself.

“I never saw the Train family together but there would often be drones flying over at night-time.”

Asked whether he had ever spoken to the Trains, Mr Gill said “no – but I used to see their car burn down past here, it had a dog box on the back”.
