Cops have seized weapons including axes and knuckledusters from street thugs and arrested dozens of people in an ongoing ‘wanding’ trial on the Gold Coast.
Police armed with metal detectors have been patrolling the Glitter Strip party precincts of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach in a 12-month trial that began in April.
It followed a spate of fatal stabbings on the Coast, including 17-year-old local boy Jack Beasley who was killed outside a Surfers Paradise supermarket just before Christmas 2019 after an altercation with a gang of youths.
His parents, Brett and Belinda, launched the Jack Beasley Foundation to push for tougher police powers to combat knife crime.
Updating the results of the trial with Mr and Mrs Beasley at the weekend, Gold Coast police acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman said more than 900 people had been ‘wanded’ since the project began.
Sixty-three people had been arrested for offences including weapons and drugs possession.
Supt Wildman said most importantly, 36 weapons including knives, screwdrivers, knuckledusters and even axes had been taken off the streets.
He said the trial was proving its worth, with knife crime reducing significantly.
