The family of murdered grandmother Vyleen White have slammed the state government as being “weak as water” on youth crime, as they attended state parliament on Thursday.
The husband of Mrs White - who was stabbed to death in a horrific random attack at a Redbank Plains shopping centre last month - Victor White, was joined by daughter Cindy Micallef in the public gallery as the LNP grilled Premier Steven Miles on the issue.
Ms Micallef said after the morning session the Premier had attended her house following the death, “so now we’ve decided to visit his house”.
“Let’s just say it was not a fun day,” she said.
“It’s the same old spin, the same old stuff, and it (the youth crime issue) just keeps getting put back onto the police.”
Mr White said the government had proved themselves to be “weak as water”, and said his six-year-old granddaughter who witnessed the horrendous attack was dealing with the fall-out.
“She saw the whole thing happen in front of her very eyes,” he said.
The Premier told parliament during Question Time he had given Ms Micallef his personal number should she wish to ever further discuss the issue with him directly.
Asked about this, she said “when he made that statement that there will be no changes to the youth crime laws, that tells me everything I need to know”.
“Nothing’s going to change from their side, so why speak shallow words when you have no intention to follow through,” she said.
The Premier said “all of the government expresses its sorrow to the White family”.
“That was an awful murder and nothing like that should ever happen in our community,” he said.
“I can also assure the House and the Queensland community that this government supports our police and we will do everything the Police Service tells us they need to keep our community safe.
“If that is more police, they will get more police. If it is more police cars, they will get more police cars. If it is a police helicopter for Townsville, we have demonstrated that we will deliver that for them.”
