E-scooter crackdown

Police have released footage of unlawful Brisbane e-scooter operators, as part of a major police crackdown on personal mobility devices (PMD).

Brisbane City Highway Patrol officers issued 84 infringements to 80 PMD riders, including some on e-scooters, in an operation that ran between 4pm last Thursday and 4am on Friday in inner Brisbane.

Among those nabbed was a 38-year old man Daisy Hill man, who was charged with eight different offences, including driving unlicensed, driving unregistered, driving uninsured, driving on a footpath, possessing dangerous drugs, obstruct police and two counts of possessing drug utensils.

Brisbane City Highway Patrol Senior Constable Duncan Hill said that e-scooter incidents are on the rise in city with riders not wearing helmets or doing the wrong thing.

“In Brisbane we have experienced a correlated increase in traffic incidents and injuries, complaints and detections of offences related to the use of e-scooters and personal mobility devices,” Sen Const. Hill said.

Of the 84 infringements:

68 were issued for failing to wear a helmet without an exemption

9 were issued for PMD users on a prohibited road

4 were issued for more than one person on PMD

2 were issued for using a handheld mobile phone while operating a PMD

1 was issued for failing to have lights on at night

“The number of offences detected as part of this operation was concerning and we want to remind everyone that we do not tolerate people disregarding their own and others safety on scooters.” Sen Const. Hill said.

Mr Hill called on riders to take care of themselves and others when operating scooters.

“When used correctly and safely, the scooters are great way to get around and see the city,” he said.

“We just want to make sure that people aren’t putting themselves or others at risk by making stupid decisions and taking unnecessary risks.”
