Police have called out the risky behaviour of regional road users after more than 600 fines were issued to motorists in a week – including a driver who clocked almost 130km/hr.
The state’s Road Policing Task Force was deployed to Central Queensland after a spate of serious crashes in the region.
The unit – that covered more than 21,000km across the region during the six-day blitz in March – issued 518 fines to drivers speeding on highways between Brisbane, Rockhampton, Mackay, Toowoomba, Dalby and Miles.
In footage released to the Courier Mail, one leadfoot rider with a pillion passenger could be seen zipping along a highway at Charters Towers doing 128km/hr in a 100km/hr zone.
Less than seven minutes later he was caught doing 113km/hr.
“Motorcyclists are among our most vulnerable road users and if they crash at speed, the consequences can be catastrophic,” Supt Rohweder said.
“This rider not only put his own life at risk but also the life of his pillion.”
Supt Rohweder said as part of the crackdown the taskforce had conducted almost 230 roadside drug tests.
Six drug drivers were busted, four people were caught not wearing seatbelts and two were fined for using their phones while driving.
Supt Rohweder said the taskforce was used to target crash hot spots and bolster the efforts of local police.
“My message to regional road users is you may think we’re not there,” he said.
“But one day you’ll be driving along and when you least expect it, we’ll be there.”
