A resident who lives near the scene of the fatal police shooting at Wieambilla on the western Darling Downs has spoken of the terrifying moment police officers told her to evacuate her Wains Rd property “within minutes”.

Shelley Burgess was within 1km of the Train property when she heard “consecutive” and “continuous” gunshots on Monday afternoon.

Ms Burgess said about 30 minutes later, two police cars came “flying down” the dusty Wains Rd, screaming “get out”.

“We were oblivious until the police turned up, they jumped out and said “get in the car and get out, there are active shooters on the loose, you need to get out now’,” she said.

“We only had a minute to get out.”

Ms Burgess said it wasn’t until late Monday afternoon that she realised Constable Rachel McCrow, Constable Matthew Arnold and her neighbour Alan Dare had been murdered.

“We were met by a police officer at the top of Wains Rd – you could tell he was physically distressed but he was still trying to calm down my son Rhydah who is autistic,” she said.

“(Police officers) are human – they shouldn’t have to go to work not knowing if they are coming home.”

Ms Burgess moved from Logan to Wieambilla three months ago after struggling to find a rental property in Brisbane.

She said when she first looked at the Wains Rd property she thought the only other neighbours were Alan and Kerry Dare.

“I got bogged, Alan came down and tried to help but then he got himself bogged – I had no idea (until Monday) that two other properties were on the road.”

Asked whether she had heard shots fired from the Train’s property before Monday’s fateful shooting, Ms Burgess said “never” and “certainly not during the day”.
