Three teens critical after Brightview crash

A witness has told of the confronting scene following a crash west of Brisbane, telling of a girl’s disoriented cries for her brother who was also involved.

Three teenagers are in critical conditions following the single-vehicle crash at Brightview in the Lockyer Valley.

Two 15-year-old boys and one 17-year-old girl were travelling in a Mazda CX-9, when it crashed at the intersection of Brightview District Rd and Brightview Rd while attempting to overtake a truck at 6am Tuesday.

It left the road and crashed into a power pole, before catching fire, according to LifeFlight crews who flew the female patient to hospital.

Off-duty nurse Angeline Martin, who attended the scene, said she consoled the female as she called out for her brother in the aftermath of the crash.

Ms Martin, who lives around the corner from the scene of the crash, said she heard a “big bang”, ran outside and saw the car in flames.

She said farmers had already rescued the teens from the burning vehicle and that they were lying on the side of the road “confused”.

“The girl was asking for her brother so I put her head in my lap and said ‘your brother is okay, help it on its way’,” Ms Martin said.

“I’m not sure whether it was her brother but one of the boys was crying out for help – both his legs were smashed.”

The female was taken to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition, while the two males were flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital, both in critical conditions.

All three patients are being treated for serious head, limb and abdominal injuries.

Brightview Rd is expected to be closed for some time.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Mark Nugent described the scene as “quite horriffic” and praised the response of nearby residents.

“The patients were actually found outside of the vehicle, it was stated two of the patients were ejected from the vehicle,” he said.

“That was quite confronting for the community folk but also our paramedics.”

He said they had “exceptional job” to keep the injured teens alive.
