Police have revealed new details after a kayaker on a Saturday afternoon paddle made the gruesome discovery of two badly decomposed bodies tied together in a regional Queensland dam.

Detectives last night launched an urgent investigation into the grisly mystery, after the tragic find about 3.30pm yesterday in the isolated Gordonbrook Dam, 21km north of Kingaroy.

It is understood the bodies had been sitting in the dam for some time and that they were found lashed together.

Police said they were yet to formally identify the couple but it was believed to be man aged in his 50s and a woman aged in her late 40s who lived near the dam.

Late last night police said a crime scene had been declared, but the circumstances surrounding the deaths are being treated as non-suspicious and no identifying factors have been confirmed at this stage.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw their white 2004 Holden Commodore station wagon parked in the picnic area of the dam to contact police.

According to sources the pair have been in the water for weeks.

“A kayaker raised the alarm after sighting the bodies floating around 5m from the shore of the dam,” police said in a statement.

“A post mortem will be conducted in coming days.”

Detectives from Kingaroy and Murgon Criminal Investigation Branch are leading the investigation.

They have appealed for anyone who saw their white 2004 Holden Commodore station wagon parked in the picnic area of the dam to contact police.

Police said they believe the vehicle has been there since February 22 and have appealed for anyone who has seen it or who knows more information to contact police.

South Burnett Regional Council CEO Mark Pitt said the council had only been made aware of the gruesome discovery about 9pm.

In response, the council had temporarily stopped the blended drinking water supply from the dam and was now taking 100 per cent of its supply from Boondooma Dam.

Mr Pitt assured local residents the blended drinking water supply had been “100 per cent safe”.

“In response to queries on water quality, council undertakes regular testing of the water supply, both raw and treated water from Gordonbrook. This monitoring ensures all water meets health guidelines before it is let into reticulation system, ” a council statement read.

Gordonbrook Dam is the main water supply for Kingaroy.

Yesterday it was at 98.68 per cent capacity.

The nearest Bureau of Meteorology weather station, Minmore, recorded 198.6mm of rain in February, nearly double the average monthly total for the area.

Camping is not permitted at the dam, along with swimming, fishing, sailing or low-horsepower boating.
