Brisbane plunged into another snap lockdown

A Queensland policeman requires surgery after allegedly being attacked by a man flouting lockdown rules.

Police intercepted two men on foot on Dunellan St at Greenslopes just before midnight Wednesday, the Brisbane Magistrates Court heard.

As police were arresting one of the men on an unrelated matter, the other man allegedly interfered and attacked the officers, the court heard.

Thomas Kirk-Forsyth, 25, was subsequently charged with grievous bodily harm, seriously assault police, wilful damage and fail to comply with a public health direction to be locked down.

Police prosecutor Constable Colclough opposed bail alleging Kirk-Forsyth presented an unacceptable risk of violent offending.

“It was a quite serious and violent assault on the sergeant and he’s requiring surgery on his elbow and arm,” he said.

Constable Colclough said Kirk-Forsyth had just been sentenced to 12 months’ probation last month and had a previous assault police on his record.

“So clearly he’s an unacceptable risk of committing further offences, particularly serious offences towards police causing injury,” he alleged.

Legal Aid lawyer Rebecca Mann conceded the allegations were serious but strict bail conditions would reduce any risks.

Ms Mann said her client was fined for his previous assault on police, indicating it was a low level offence, and his criminal history was limited.

“Most of his life he led a law abiding life … ultimately he instructs that his mental health has declined recently,” she said.

Magistrate Tina Previtera granted bail and adjourned the matter to September 6.

“Police will now be keeping a very close eye on you,” she said.

Kirk-Forsyth responded: “My only intention is to do the right thing”.
