Teen killed in Gold Coast e-bike crash just days after eight-year-old’s death on Sunshine Coast
Tributes have began for a teen who died in a second e-bike fatality in South East Queensland in just days, after the death of an eight-year-old on the Sunshine Coast.
Friends of a teenager who died in an e-bike crash on the Gold Coast – just days after an eight-year-old boy died in an e-bike collision on the Sunshine Coast, have paid tribute.
The deaths come as Queensland Attorney-General Deb Frecklington defended a long-running review into the controversial vehicles, which is not due to be completed until March.
Queensland Police and ambulance personnel responded to reports of a single vehicle e-bike crash on Broadbeach Road at Broadbeach at 3.07am Saturday.
The 15-year-old Worongary boy suffered significant head injuries and was initially treated by police officers who performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
He rushed to hospital in a “life-threatening condition”, but he was unable to be saved and died a short time later.
The boy was riding a SurRon Ultra Bee Electric Dirt Bike, which sells for almost $10,000 brand new and has a listed top speed of 90km/h, although some websites suggest the bike can go even faster.
Visiting the scene of the crash, the 15-year-old’s friends laid flowers in tribute.
‘It’s just hard, to know that he’s gone now,‘ one friend told Nine News.
‘He was really nice to everyone, he wouldn’t talk bad about anyone. He was like including,‘ he continued.
It comes after Mountain Creek boy, Zeke Hondow, died after colliding head-on with another older e-bike rider on Thursday.
Zeke was riding on the bike path near Kawana Way and Sunshine Mwy in Mountain Creek on the Sunshine Coast when he collided with a 15-year-old boy riding another e-bike at 3.36pm.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the eight-year-old was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition with “significant head injuries”.
Tragically, he was declared dead on Thursday afternoon.
The 15-year-old is assisting police with their investigations.
