An 18-year-old Calamvale man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with causing the death of a pedestrian struck by a car at Sunnybank on Saturday night.
Police allege Abu-Bakr Mohammed, 18, of Calamvale was driving a white Volkswagen Golf when he ran a red light on Mains Rd near Turton St and struck a pedestrian about 11.20pm Saturday.
Sunnybank man Vinson Yeung, 25, suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he died.
Mr Mohammed was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.
His case was mentioned briefly in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday morning, but he was not brought up from the cells for it.
The matter was adjourned to the same court tomorrow, where Mr Mohammed’s legal team will make a bail application.
He was remanded in custody in the meantime, but is expected to appear in court in person for his bail application hearing on Tuesday.
It will be alleged the car had left a hoon gathering at a shopping centre carpark at the intersection of Mains Ro and McCullough St before the crash.
Anyone who was in the area and who has information or relevant footage of the white Volkswagen Golf is asked to contact police.
Police have also asked for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
Sunnybank local Kenny Thein Heng said he was feeling distressed after he saw the collision while walking home on Saturday night.
“I was just walking back home and … heard tyres screeching to a stop then suddenly just saw this man laying on the floor,” he told The Courier-Mail.
“I think he was just crossing the road, there was like a lot of cars on the side, to stop and help out.
“It was traumatic, as I never seen something like this before.”
Mr Heng said he was a car enthusiast.
“I go to the Sunnybank rooftop to see nice cars, but … it was so unfortunate what happened.
“It makes it hard for us car enthusiasts to enjoy good looking cars.”
The crash is under investigation.
