Bikies in Australia- A short history

An alleged Comanchero bikie has been accused of an assault at a swanky bar in Fortitude Valley.

George Bejat, who will contest the allegations, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court today wearing a Givenchy jumper after being charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and affray by Taskforce Maxima.

Police will allege Bejat and other Comancheros were at Dirty Sultan Bar for the Hot Balkan Nights event on April 18 when the incident occured.

Police will allege Bejat stumbled and fell at the party and when another man went to assist him the 35 year old punched him before others joined in.

Police will allege the man was taken to hospital with a broken nose and cheekbone.

The court heard at least one other man had been charged.

Bejat’s lawyer Kristy Bell of Howden Saggers Lawyers said her client would fight the charges during an application for bail.

Ms Bell said Bejat denied police allegations that he was a member of the Comancheros and that the alleged assault was unprovoked.

Ms Bell said there had been a short conversation between Bejat and the man before the alleged assault.

“ The allegation is that the punch followed that conversation … what occurred in that conversation may give rise to a defence,” she said.

“My instructions are certainly that the matter is contested and will proceed to a hearing at this stage”.

Police opposed bail on the grounds Bejat was an alleged flight risk, having recently returned from overseas.

Ms Bell said there was nothing in her client’s three page criminal history to suggest he was a risk of failing to appear in court.

“It is true to say he has recently returned from overseas but he is entitled in my submission to take a holiday,” she said.

Acting Magistrate Peter Cooke granted bail on the condition Bejat report weekly to police, not contact the alleged victim or enter a licensed premises in the Fortitude Valley and Brisbane Safe Night Precincts between 9pm and 6am.

The matter was adjourned to May 18.
