The teenage thugs who stabbed 15-year-old Angus Beaumont to death had a history of violence including knife crime and continued to offend even after being granted bail for the boy’s murder.

The two 14-year-old killers had repeatedly been allowed to walk free with one on probation for a violent assault and the other on bail for armed robbery when they murdered Angus at a Redcliffe park in March 2020.

The appalling criminal histories of the teenage offenders was revealed in a sentencing hearing in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday after they were earlier found guilty of murder at trial in June.

Crown Prosecutor Christopher Cook said one of the teens, now aged 17, had a criminal history which began when he was aged 11 and he lit fires at Runcorn before later setting the Redcliffe Youth Centre ablaze.

He was also involved in physical altercations with police, committed offences while on bail, and was caught with a knife at Redcliffe near where he would later go on to kill Angus about a year later.

In November 2018 he was involved in extorting a mother who was pushing a pram on the street, threatening to kill the woman’s baby. He was on bail for offences of violence at the time.

On another occasion, in what the prosecutor described as “an example of considerable violence”, he assaulted a girl and boy both aged 14 at Redcliffe, using a scooter to hit a girl in the head twice, fracturing her nose.

He was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and was still subject to that order when he murdered Angus.

He’s also been convicted over an incident in October 2019 in which he stabbed a 15-year-old boy in the shoulder with a pair of scissors.

In May this year, just days before his murder trial was due to begin, the teen stole an Audi which he used to lead police on a dangerous chase through the streets of Brisbane.

He pleaded guilty to that offending on Tuesday.

“His prospects of rehabilitation in the Crown submission are poor and he demonstrated a significant risk to the community,” Mr Cook said.

The second defendant who delivered the fatal blow against Angus was also aged 14 at the time and is now 16. The New Zealand-born teen, who faces deportation after his sentence is served, also has a serious criminal history dating back to when he was aged 13.

Justice Jackson reserved his decision and will sentence the teens on a date to be set.
