Security guard may be left blind after eye ruptured in horror attack

A young father-to-be could be permanently blind and will have to learn to walk again after being chased down and struck in the head following a late-night assault outside his workplace.

A security guard may be left permanently blind and will have to learn to walk again after allegedly being bashed by a group of men south of Brisbane early on Saturday morning.
Haimona Tawha, 28, was working his regular shift at the Windaroo Tavern in Logan when a fight involving a number of people began.

Police allege a 21-year-old man assaulted another 21-year-old outside the Beaudesert Beenleigh Rd tavern, prior to Mr Tawha being injured.

A number of people are believed to have been involved in the fracas and two other people were treated by ambulance officers at the scene. They were taken to the Logan Hospital in a stable condition.

It is alleged that during the incident Mr Tawha was chased down by a group of men and assaulted outside a nearby service station.

Mr Tawha, who is expecting his first child within months, underwent emergency surgery after being transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with serious head and facial injuries about 2.30am on Saturday.

Surgeons removed Mr Tawha’s right eye, which was completely ruptured, in an effort to retain severely limited sight to his left eye.

He remains in intensive care with shattered cheekbones, a broken nose, a fractured jaw, broken ribs, and a fracture on his C2 vertebrae.

He will have to undergo long-term therapy to learn how to walk unassisted once again.

A 21-year-old Loganlea man has subsequently been charged following the incident. He is due to face Beenleigh Magistrates Court on September 28.
The man was charged with assaults occasioning bodily harm in a public place while adversely affected by intoxicating substance, common assault, and committing public nuisance at a licensed premise.

A Go-Fund-Me account has been set-up to help financially support Mr Tawha, who works three jobs to support his growing family.

As of 1pm on Wednesday, the Go-Fund-Me had raised more than $53,000.
Fundraising organiser Honza Demeter has thanked friends family and strangers for their contributions and messages of support.

“Thank you every one for all the love and support it’s been absolutely amazing and much appreciated by his how whole family,” Mr Demeter said.
“Still in early days but (he is) in every one’s prayers and wishes he will pull through like the soldier that he is much love to all and thank you once again.”
