A chippie who thought he was giving someone a taste of their own medicine, after his vehicle’s wheels were pinched, took revenge on the wrong car.
Ryan Lee Marshall, 27, was staying at the Proserpine Metropole Hotel for the night, when he was caught on CCTV unbolting two wheels from a car in the hotel’s carpark before putting them in his boot, just before midnight on December 10.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Emma Myors told Proserpine Magistrates Court the car belonged to one of the employees at the hotel who found his car missing two wheels the next morning and called police.
Sergeant Myors added that the CCTV footage showed Marshall had also tried to remove the other two wheels from the car, but had failed to do so.
Marshall faced court on Monday, and was asked by Magistrate Michelle Howard why he had resorted to such “brazen behaviour”.
Marshall told Ms Howard his wheels had been stolen from him the first time that he came to Proserpine some weeks ago, and that when he got to the hotel on Sunday, he thought that it was “the exact same car that took (his) wheels”.
“It was unfortunate for me that it wasn’t,” he told Ms Howard, adding that he had let his “pride” get in the way and made “silly choices”.
“I should have just let it go.”
Marshall was also charged with driving without a licence and driving well over the speed limit on the Peaks Down Highway at Nebo on November 12.
Ms Howard told Marshall there were “consequences” for his actions.
Marshall pleaded guilty to speeding, driving without a licence, to stealing property and attempting to steal property.
He was fined $1500 and was ordered to pay $527 of compensation to the car owner.
