A man who allegedly bit a police officer causing him to require surgery has been remanded in custody.

A man who allegedly bit a police officer’s finger causing him to require surgery has had his case mentioned in court for the first time.

Police will allege officers were called to a woman’s home in Brighton for a welfare check at 11am on Friday.

Police will allege when they arrived at the Queens Pde address a man became aggressive and assaulted two officers, including biting one of them on the finger.

Ruben Whare Hei Shelford, 31, was charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm, strangulation (domestic violence offence) and unlawful stalking and three counts each of assault (domestic violence offence) and serious assault police.

Police will allege a Senior Constable underwent treatment in hospital for an injury to his finger.

Shelford’s matter was briefly mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.

He did not appear and there was no application for bail.

The matter was adjourned to next year with Shelford remanded in custody.
