Detectives investigating a violent brawl that resulted in a man being shot dead at North Booval on Tuesday say a dispute over property is believed to have sparked the deadly confrontation.

A 31-year-old man suffered two gunshot wounds and later died following the disturbance on Baden Jones Way, North Booval, about 5pm Tuesday.

Detective Acting Inspector Heath McQueen said police had so far established that nine people were involved in the incident.

“It’s believed to be two groups of persons who are known to each other who have prearranged to meet outside an address in that area,” Insp McQueen said.

“Several persons involved in that disturbance have armed themselves with weapons including multiple baseball bats and one person at this point is known to have had a firearm in their possession.

“During the assault which occurred on the footpath and street area that firearm has been discharged multiple times and as a result of that a 31-year-old male has suffered two gunshot wounds and subsequently died at the scene.”

Insp McQueen confirmed several other people involved in the incident were still in hospital.

“One of those persons remains in a critical condition having suffered significant head injuries,” he said.

“I’d like to reassure the community that this is a targeted attack and these two groups of persons are known to each other and the police.

“The community does not need to be concerned for their ongoing safety.”

Insp McQueen confirmed the dispute related to property and “developed very quickly from discussion to assault.”

The area near the intersection of Baden Jones Way and Nixon Drive is still closed off as a crime scene and is undergoing forensic examination on Wednesday morning.

Police are conducting extensive door knocks of the neighbourhood.

“A number of people are assisting us with our inquiries who are involved in the incident however there are a number of people who have been uncooperative as well,” Insp McQueen said.

Police said they were still investigating what type of firearm was used.

They confirmed only one person was shot.

One person was also struck with a motor vehicle however that person is not the one who is in a critical condition with head injuries in hospital.

Police are yet to confirm a link between the North Booval incident and another incident at Tivoli about the same time.

“I cannot confirm if his injuries were related to the North Booval incident, however, I can confirm that there were two persons arrested as a result of that incident in Tivoli yesterday,” Insp McQueen said.

“Hopefully as the day evolves we’ll be able to put some pieces of this puzzle together.

“There were the only two persons who were arrested at Tivoli, however other persons are assisting us with our investigations.”

Insp McQueen said police were still looking for one or two people and were throwing lots of resources into the search.

“These people I won’t comment on whether they’re known to police,” he said.

“They’ve involved themselves in a property dispute yesterday which was quite minor in nature and they’ve escalated that to a point where someone has died as a result.”
