A former police officer is dead after allegedly being attacked by another patient at Robina Hospital on the Gold Coast.

Nine News reported Kevin Farr, 68, was reportedly in his hospital room when another patient with dementia assaulted him.

The incident occurred last month, with reports of his death only now being revealed by Queensland Health.

A Gold Coast Health spokesperson said an elderly cognitively impaired inpatient had allegedly assaulted another inpatient in the ward on October 8, with the victim sustaining a serious head injury.

The victim, whose underlying medical condition prevented a normal healing response, died the next day.

“The incident occurred on a ward accustomed to caring for dementia patients and was staffed accordingly,” the spokesperson said.

“No staff members or other patients were injured in this isolated incident.

“The safety and wellbeing of our patients and staff remains our priority.”

The matter has been referred to Queensland police and a spokesperson told The Courier-Mail investigations were ongoing.
