Residents in several suburbs in Brisbane south have been woken up by illegal fireworks in the middle of the night.
A video shared to social media shows the fireworks that appear to be set off from Bonemill Park. However, residents in Eight Mile Plains, Sunnybank and Runcorn have told The Courier Mail they were woken up by the loud noises.
One resident said she thought someone was getting shot in their street when they woke up to the fireworks only to realise what it was.
Resources Safety and Health Queensland confirmed at least one complaint had been made at 1.45am.
“It was set off at Bonemill Park. We’ve now got a woken baby who we’re trying to settle and a scared cat and a 12-week-old puppy, fuming,” one mother said on social media.
“No word of a lie, I thought our house was being shot at.”
Another woman said “we woke up with a fright – we are near Malbon. Thought it was a shooting to start with.”
It is understood the fireworks used were multi-shot kegs in a large quantity.
An RSHQ spokeswoman said there were three complaints of illegal fireworks at Eight Mile Plains in Brisbane.
“It is illegal to use fireworks in Queensland without a licence and the penalty is up to six months imprisonment or a fine of $64,520,” she said.
“There is no penalty if illegal fireworks are handed over willingly.
“Fireworks in the wrong hands can be deadly. We encourage anyone who suspects illegal fireworks are in use to first call police on triple-0 then report it to RSHQ on 1300 739 868 or via
the website.”
The investigation is ongoing.
