A young man has died after he fell 40m in a rock climbing incident at Mount Ngungun on Saturday.
Emergency services were called midday Saturday with reports the man had fallen while rock climbing at Glass House Mountains.
An extensive rescue operation unfolded with paramedics winched from a helicopter to where the man was, however he died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Sunshine Coast district duty officer acting Senior Sergeant Jimmy Driver said it was a “harrowing event”.
He said the co-ordinator of a nearby rock climbing group gave first aid to the man initially and stayed with him until paramedics arrived.
“The mountain this afternoon was extremely busy,” Senior Sergeant Driver said.
“It was a harrowing event.
“People were shaken and traumatised by the incident which occurred well in view of multiple people.”
It is understood the man is from Queensland but not a Sunshine Coast local.
Witnesses were left reeling by the incident, with one stating: “Chopper there now, doesn’t look good”.
A Queensland Ambulance Service representative described the incident as a “significant fall”.
