Queensland’s worrying 2022 road toll revealed

Police have issued a dire warning to motorists and singled out one group of road users in particularly after new statistics revealed a horror period for deaths on Queensland roads.

Police have issued a warning to motorcycle riders on Tuesday as Queensland recorded almost the same number of deaths by 22 February 22, 12 deaths, as the monthly total for February 2021 (13 deaths).

Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus encouraged riders to take more responsibility for their safety, reminding riders that a safer ride starts with attitude and concentration.

“The way you feel when you get on your motorcycle will show up in the way you ride” Assistant Commissioner Marcus said.

Assistant Commissioner Marcus also warned against riding while fatigued or impaired by alcohol, drugs or dehydration.

“The road ahead constantly changes. It is important to watch the road surface, monitor your surroundings, including your mirrors and instruments,” he said.

Assistant. Commissioner Marcus referred to statistics from 2021 that showed that 93 per cent of crashes were a result of excessive speed, with 73 per cent of crashes occurring because of rider fault.

Friday night to Sunday is the most deadly time for motorcycle riders with 50 per cent of deaths occurring during that time.

Statistics released by QLD Police on February 18 2022 showed that 22 lives had been lost overall in February on QLD roads, with 600 people injured in crashes.

The number of lives lost on QLD roads by February 18 2022 was 40, three times more than at the same time in 2021.

Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder said that speed was a contributing factor in the majority of serious crashes.

“Our officers are seeing extremely dangerous risk-taking behaviour on our roads, particularly when it comes to speeding.” Acting Chief Supt Rohweder said.

“Safety on our roads is up to all road users whether they are driving a car, riding a motorcycle or pushbike or are a pedestrian.” Assistant. Commissioner Marcus said.
