Quarantine dodger ordered into hotel, hit with massive fine

A Queensland man who flouted new home quarantine rules has been hit with a huge fine and ordered into hotel quarantine.

A Gold Coast man who flouted new home quarantine rules has been hit with a $1334 fine and ordered into hotel quarantine.

Police say the 36-year-old, who travelled to Queensland after the border partially reopened on November 15, admitted to leaving his residence on several occasions.

They say he could not be contacted by authorities, prompting police to make follow-up inquiries.

“The man was not at his listed Southport residence when police conducted compliance checks on Tuesday, November 23,” police said.

“He was located on Wednesday where he was fined $1334 for failing to comply with the Public Health Direction and directed into hotel quarantine.

“People undertaking home quarantine must not leave their specified residence for the duration of their quarantine period and respond to phone calls and text messages as part of the home check-in program.”

Police have conducted more than 330 home quarantine checks since the new system went live last Monday, with the vast majority of people fully compliant.

As of 5am on Tuesday, a total of 4827 home quarantine border passes for entry into Queensland from a domestic hotspot had been processed.
