Qld police shooting: Father of cop killers tells of ‘dark path’

The father of the Queensland cop killers has told how one of his sons was the only difficult one and took over his brother’s relationship.

Father of Wieambilla cop killers tells of ‘dark path’

The father of the two brothers who ambushed four police officers, killing two of them and a neighbour, believes his son Gareth was very “volatile” with an interest in guns.

Ronald Train, father to Nathaniel and Gareth, told A Current Affair he had delayed shock over the incident.

“I just could not understand how something like this could have occurred with two children who had been raised by my late wife Gwen and myself with certain beliefs, Christian beliefs,” he told the program.

“But they went down this dark track which we have no understanding of.”

Mr Train said his son Gareth was the only difficult one.

“He was very volatile and very controlling. We had troubles with him at school in Brisbane and trouble with him at school in Toowoomba which we had to address, so he was difficult to control.

“Gareth in particular was obsessed with guns and weapons, Nathaniel to a lesser degree but he used to go shooting with Gareth.”

Mr Train confirmed Nathaniel had two children with Stacey Train, Aiden and Madeleine, but admitted he hadn’t seen his sons in 23 years.

“I think my second son Gareth … was on the Asperger’s line, very difficult to control, very overpowering,” he said.

“I think in the end he took over the relationship Nathaniel and Stacey had because Gareth and Nathaniel were very close.”

Mr Train said his heart went out when he found out two police officers and a neighbour were murdered.

“I find that difficult to get my heart around,” he said.

“I don’t excuse my boys for their behaviour or their reactions. I understand why people would be critical of me.

“I haven’t seen them for 23 years, I don’t know what they’ve done in that period of time.

“They will stand before God for what they’ve done, they can’t be brought to justice now in this world but they will before God.”
