Two Queensland cops charged with assaulting a man in a watchhouse are still on full pay despite being suspended from their jobs.

Two police officers have been charged with assaulting a man in a Far North Queensland watchhouse.

Two police officers charged with assaulting a man in a Far North Queensland watchhouse are continuing to be paid after being suspended from their jobs, it can be revealed.

The two senior constables were charged relating to an incident involving a 23-year-old man at a watchhouse in January.

The Courier-Mail has been told the unarmed man in the watchhouse was tasered during the incident however the police service has refused to confirm those details.

One of officers, a 51-year-old senior constable has been charged with deprivation of liberty and assault. The other, a senior constable, 43, has been charged with assault.

Both officers have been suspended from the service and are expected to appear in court on October 2.

“The QPS does not tolerate unlawful conduct by any members and takes these allegations very seriously,” the service said in its original press release, before later confirming the officers were still being paid after their charges.

“As the matter is now before the courts, we are unable to comment further.

“In keeping with our commitment to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability, we have undertaken to inform the public when a member of the Service faces serious allegations of misconduct.

“This does not mean that the allegations against the member have been substantiated.”

Police said the man was being held in the watchhouse for property and assault offences.
