Police have charged two people following an alleged hit and run traffic crash that injured a police officer in Bundaberg on Sunday.

It will be alleged, just before 4pm, police were conducting checks on an abandoned stolen vehicle near Cullen Street in Walkervale before a silver Subaru Forester drove by.

The Subaru allegedly drove at one of the police officers after he attempted to intercept the vehicle.

The officer sustained minor chest and foot injuries from the crash and was taken to the Bundaberg Base Hospital, where he has since been discharged.

The alleged driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old woman from the Bundaberg town of Branyan has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, fail to comply with duties of driver involved in a crash, and possession of drug utensil.

She is due to appear before the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday.

The passenger of the vehicle, a 16-year-old Kalkie boy, has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle in company and wilful damage.

He is due to appear before the Bundaberg Childrens Court today.

Earlier, Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said the actions that led to the officer being injured were “callous and cowardly”.

“This incident in Bundaberg had the potential to be fatal for a fellow officer,” he said.

“He was doing a job that is at the core of policing, trying to intervene to protect the community and stop criminals.

“I’m told when this vehicle struck him, the tyres ran over his chest and legs. It will be alleged those in the car would’ve known they’d hit someone yet they left the scene.”

“The injured officer’s quick thinking partner and paramedics worked to keep him calm and get him to hospital for specialist care.

“Incredibly the officer has escaped serious injury and fractures. He’s very bruised and sore but has been released from hospital.

Mr Prior said the officer was a father of one, a plain clothes senior constable, who joined the police service after serving in the Australian Defence Force

“He will take time away from the job to heal and recover,” he said.

“I’m hoping he’s back on the frontline soon.

“This is another example of how unpredictable and volatile policing can be.

“My colleagues however will still turn up every shift to protect the community, they will still put their safety at risk to stop harm happening to others. Queenslanders should be proud of their police.”
