A man charged with stalking young women in the city who police allege is a danger to the public and a “predator,” has been freed on bail.

Police prosecutor Mark Hughes told Magistrate Andrew Moloney that Andrei Gibkin should not be freed on bail because “he’s been preying on young women around the city, around Queensland University of Technology, he is a danger to women”.

Sgt Hughes told the court police have received further complaints from other alleged victims, and some complaints of alleged further incidents at South Bank.

Gibkin, unemployed, from New Farm, is facing seven charges, including three counts of common assault, three counts of stalking and one of refusing to give access to his devices.

Sgt Hughes told the court the 25-year-old “has a particular” modus operandi “of approaching them … opening or grabbing their phone, opening their Instagram account, searching for his own Instagram account.”

“He tries to give them his phone number. He has obtained phone numbers previously from women, he’s continually contacted them,” sgt Hughes said.

“He’s likely to commit further offences if released on bail.”

On August 14 he’s alleged to have assaulted and stalked a young woman between Albert St and George St.

The same day he is alleged to have assaulted a second victim on the corner of Albert St and Queen St.

The following day he is alleged to have returned near the Royal on the Park Hotel where police say he assaulted and stalked a third young woman.

Defence solicitor Axel Beard told the court that although his client was facing “unpleasant and criminal allegations” the only charge on which he is likely to face actual time in custody is for the alleged refusal to give his password.

In granting Gibkin bail, Magistrate Moloney said the charges were “serious and concerning.”

However, he noted Gibkin has no criminal history and granted him bail to appear in court on September 20.

He was freed on strict bail conditions including a curfew between 7pm and 6am and reporting to Fortitude Valley Police station twice a week.

He is banned from the Brisbane safe night precinct as well as South Bank parklands, must not contact or approach his three alleged victims and is banned from going within 100 metres of any university or tertiary education.
