A police sergeant has been accidentally shot by a fellow officer during routine shooting accreditation after they tried to stop the officer from tripping over.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll told officers the experienced district field training officer was shot at a Childers facility.

The Courier-Mail has been told the female senior constable accidentally shot the sergeant on Thursday morning.

“Initial information indicates the sergeant, who was the safety officer at the time, attempted to prevent a fellow officer from tripping as they were moving backwards during a live-fire training session, when the accidental discharge occurred,” Ms Carroll wrote to officers.

“A single round was discharged striking the sergeant in the lower leg.

“I’ve been assured that everything possible is being done by the wonderful health care workers who have been involved in his treatment.”

Ms Carroll said the north coast police region would investigate and that Workplace Health and Safety had been advised.

“I will endeavour to keep you updated on the sergeant’s condition in due course,” she wrote.

“Stay safe.”
