Two officers run down by an allegedly stolen truck as they tried to arrest the driver are recovering well, with one of them miraculously cleared of major internal injuries.

Detective Senior Constable Steven Ingerson, 54, was expected to undergo surgery after being flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with suspected serious head and pelvic injuries yesterday.

But he has since been cleared of any head trauma and has suffered a fractured pelvis but will not need surgery at this stage.

Det Sen Const Ingerson and his colleague, Detective Senior Constable Mark Penberthy, 56, were allegedly run down by a Hino truck that had been stolen from Oakey business Tyreright that morning.

Police will allege the two officers spotted the stolen truck and got out of their vehicle to approach the driver.

When they opened the door to the truck, it is alleged the driver accelerated, trapping the officers between the truck and the police car.

They were then thrown across the bonnet and onto the road.

The driver of the truck is alleged to have driven off but was followed by two police cars to the Goombungee waste management plant.

Police will allege the driver of the truck rammed both those vehicles, causing extensive damage and minor injuries to two officers.

A family friend of Det Sen Const Ingerson said he was “bright and cheery” in the Princess Alexandra Hospital and was not expected to need surgery at this stage.

The remarkable prognosis comes after he had to be intubated and received a blood transfusion by medical responders. His family has been by his side.

The 45-year-old driver of the truck, Bartholomew Peter Dornbusch, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, endangering the safety of a person in a vehicle with intent, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, break and enter, wilful damage, evade police and possess dangerous drugs.

His matter was briefly heard in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court were he was remanded in custody.

The Hino truck is one of two vehicles stolen from the tyre yard around 4am, with a HiLux ute also taken.

Police found the HiLux around 10.30am, using road spikes to bring it to a stop on Omara Rd at Charlton.

Two men, aged 19 and 28, were arrested and charged with various offences including stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and drug offences.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said Sen Const Ingerson was now out of his medically induced coma and was talking to his wife and children.

“He’s still in a significant amount of pain and specialists are now determining his treatment and surgery options,” Mr Leavers said.

“We are very relieved he’s been taken off the critical list. He’s looking at a significant recovery and the Police Union will be there to assist him return to frontline policing.

“The other four injured officers have been released from hospital and are recovering with their families.

“Those arrested over this incident showed a callous disregard for the lives of our police and they should face the maximum penalties for the offences they have been charged with. We could have had multiple police murdered and we are thankful for the support the Southern Downs community has shown to police across the region today.”
