Police are investigating whether shots were fired in a “quiet” suburban street in Brisbane’s southeast overnight moments before a serious crash involving a stolen car.
Residents have reported seeing vehicles driving “erratically” and hearing “gunshots” moments before the two vehicles crashed along Gallipoli Rd near Salonica Rd at Carina Heights about 10.15pm.
Footage given to The Courier-Mail shows two cars getting close to a roundabout, with someone leaning out of the window, before seeing a bright flash that neighbours believe was a gun being fired.
There were no people at the scene when authorities arrived, with police investigating whether shots were fired in the nearby area.
Authorities believe it’s likely a single shot was fired towards the ground from one of the vehicles moments before the two-vehicle collision.
The cars were reportedly taken for a joy ride before they crashed.
A Queensland Police Services spokeswoman said the cars were a grey BMW X4 and a white Mazda 3.
One of the vehicles, the Mazda 3, was stolen from an address at Kinkuna Street at Wishart on March 27. It’s unclear whether the BMW was stolen.
Nicky, who lives nearby, said she could see the cars and it looked like they were going to hit about five minutes before the crash.
“The car at the front, started reversing up to the BMW behind it as if it was going to hit it but then it just stopped short,” she said.
“And then we just heard the gunshot. And we both hit the deck. We freaked out and they took off up Gallipoli Rd.
“The white car went flying up Gallipoli Rd, and then the BMW took off after it.
“You could see them fly past. I thought they were going to crash because they were on the wrong side of the road and there’s a bend up there.”
Nicky said about six people came outside from homes after the gunshot noises.
“It was like “oh my God”, everybody came out because we all knew it was a gunshot,” she said.
“We were then sitting in the dark, calling the police and then they came back. So we kept seeing the BMW and the white car. It was like they were looking for each other.
“And we were again freaking out because we knew someone had a gun. They were on the wrong side of the road, all over the place.”
Fellow resident Brett Edwards said he was lying in bed when he heard “gunshot noises” and then a crash about five minutes after.
The crash between the two cars was captured on CCTV with people seen leaving the vehicles shortly after.
“It was just a bang. It was hard to distinguish between fireworks and gunshots. It made all the dogs go crazy,” he said.
“A bit later, we heard a huge bang, which we knew was a car crash, like you could tell the sound.
He ran outside and sprinted down the street where he saw some people sweating at each other.
“And so I asked the guy, ‘are you OK?’ and he said, ‘Yeah, we’re fine. We’re fine.’ But they were still swearing at each other and whatnot.
“That’s when I noticed there was a gunshot on the windshield of the white car.”
One woman told The Courier-Mail she was watching TV when she heard a loud noise.
“I got a bit startled, it was a horrendous, horrific noise,” she said.
“I heard the speed of the car going up and it was a classic end.
“There was this classical, biblical music in the background, it was so weird.”
The woman said she then heard people scream, “We’ve got to get out of here bro”.
Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
