A second man has been charged after a car owner was allegedly slashed with a machete during an attempted early morning carjacking in Brisbane’s south.
Police allege that at 6am a 48-year-old man was in his car on Audrey St at Camp Hill when he was approached by two men armed with a machete.
They allegedly threatened the man and demanded his car keys, but he refused to hand them over.
He was then allegedly assaulted before the men fled in a Kia Sorento.
It was found abandoned nearby. Police allege two BMWs were stolen from a different street in the suburb.
Police attended an address in Redcliffe on Saturday where a 21-year-old man was arrested about 11am.
One of the stolen BMWs was located at the same address, police said.
Police on Monday sighted a stolen silver BMW320i travelling west on Duffield Road in Margate about 12.45am.
Officers tried intercepting the car before it allegedly evaded police and fled.
The car was found on Plume Street at Redcliffe about 1.20am after it crashed into a fence.
A 23-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple offences including enter dwelling and commit, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle speeding and evasion offence at night.
The man injured on Saturday suffered cuts to his chest and arm and was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
His wife thanked a tradie who drove up the street while the incident was occurring and stopped to help.
“Who knows how much worse it could have been,” she wrote on social media.
She said her husband was OK and “has been stitched up in hospital”.
“It’s so scary how violence is increasing in our beautiful community.”
A resident of Audrey St, who wished to remain nameless, witnessed the police response to the incident shortly after it occurred.
“We passed just after 6am and saw the police and thought it might be just an attempted break in and didn’t realise it was people with machetes trying to steal his car,” he said.
“But luckily for him, the tradie turned up early for work and gave assistance, which is very fortunate for him.”
The resident mentioned his family had also been recently targeted by would-be thieves in unrelated incidents.
“There there’s been a lot in this area. Yeah, the house beside us lost two cars in one night,” he said.
“We had six coming in our yard, trying to break in, and I think they saw the dog and shot through. Six people all masks over their face and some pretty big people. There was a female there as well.
“You have no chance, you what I mean, if you go outside to try, you’re better off just handing the keys over and letting them go.”
He said the police were doing the best they can, but were ultimately not empowered to remove individuals from the community.
“The police are very supportive.
“They come around, they’re doing their best and I feel sorry for them that they catch these offenders and, you know, shortly thereafter they are back out doing it again.”
