Missing escapee from Wacol prison precinct back in custody after attempted knifepoint carjacking on Gold Coast

A sex offender under strict GPS monitoring is in custody following an urgent manhunt after he allegedly removed his monitoring device at a Brisbane train station and attempted to hijack a woman’s car at knifepoint on the Gold Coast.

A sex offender under strict GPS monitoring is in custody nine hours after police alerted Brisbane residents to be on the lookout for him.

Police say Jamie Nelson-Adams, 35, who had been living under supervision at the Wacol prison precinct after his release from a high-security jail, removed his electric ankle monitoring device at Milton train station about 3pm on Monday, sparking an urgent manhunt.

Nelson-Adams was finally located on the Gold Coast after allegedly attempting to hijack a woman’s car.

He allegedly threatened the 67-year-old woman at knifepoint as he entered the passenger seat of her car while it was stationary in Southport about 6.45pm.

The woman screamed, drawing attention to Nelson-Adams who then fled the scene on foot, police allege. She received minor injuries during the incident.

Police say he was later arrested in a Cypress Ave carpark at Surfers Paradise about 12:30am.

Nelson-Adams, convicted of sexually assaulting two young children at different times, was last year placed under a 10-year supervision order meaning he could live in Wacol with his location always monitored by authorities.

He had been released from a high-security prison before he was moved to the Wacol prison precinct, which is surrounded by a wire perimeter, and there are regular spot checks.

CCTV cameras capture the comings and goings of those living there at all hours of the day and night.

He was banned contacting any children under the age of 16.

His conditions included he must get permission to use a computer, phone or another device to access the internet.

If he had a phone he was to give all passcodes and passwords to QCS.

Among his conditions, he was banned from drinking or go to pubs, clubs, hotels or nightclubs or bottle shops.

He was remanded in custody to appear via video link on April 12.
