Police say they expect to see “outcomes shortly” on an investigation into a series of frightening incidents where women walking popular Mount Coot-tha hiking trails have been targeted.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Denzil Clark of the Crime and Intelligence Command said police had “surged” resources into the area to ensure women feel safe running and hiking the trails.
It comes after a woman was assaulted from behind and pushed to the ground by an unknown man on the Maculata walking track earlier this month.
The incident came to light after former NRL player Arana Taumata posted an Instagram story describing how he’d come to the woman’s aid after finding her shaken and dazed moments after the attack.
And this week, another report was made to police about a man loitering and acting aggressively towards women on the Litchfield Track and Mahogany Trail.
The incidents are not believed to be linked.
Mr Clark said investigations were ongoing.
“We have surged police into the area,” he said.
“We are conducting intensive patrols to ensure that people in those areas are safe and that they feel safe.
“In due course, we will see the outcomes of those investigations and any offenders held to account. I expect we will see some outcomes shortly.”
Mr Clark said police take community safety “very seriously” and urged people to be vigilant if using the area.
“We need to work with the community to ensure that they also protect themselves, that they take precautions so that they’re not putting themselves at risk,” he said.
“We would like to see that every person is safe wherever they go at any time and we’re working very hard to achieve that.
“We are surging in extra police to make sure that (people) can walk on those trails and feel safe.”
