An investigation is under way after the man was killed in a daylight shooting in Ipswich.

Emergency services were called to a home on Old Logan Road in Gailes at 4pm on Saturday where a 36-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Critical care paramedics worked on the man on the footpath for more than half an hour, but he died at the scene.

Acting Detective Inspector Heath McQueen described the scene as a “targeted attack”.

He said that last night a station wagon with four males approached the address at the Old Logan Road where a conversation has occurred.

“Shortly after the conversation the males entered the dwelling with the victim, and during their time inside the house a dispute occurred where it was alleged that one male discharged a firearm into one of the internal walls.”

It was alleged that four males immediately ran from the house back to their vehicle, with the victim pursuing the men where a second altercation occurred.

Mr McQueen alleged that one male offender discharged a firearm and struck the victim in the chest.

Despite QAS’s best efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

It is believed the victim and the four men were known to each other.

“There was no need for this to escalate to the point that it has,” said Mr McQueen.

At the time of the occurrence, three other people were in the house including the victim’s 36-year-old partner, and their 2 year old son.

Police said that the partner managed to escape with the son during the offence.

A 45 year-old female who was an associate was also in the house.

Mr McQueen said that there are a number of persons of interest in relation to the investigation.

He asked those people to come forward and assist us with police inquiries.

“More than one person formed a common intention, they attended an address, and as

a result of their actions we’ve had a murder committed.”

Police have begun the process of contacting a “large extended Aboriginal family.”

“As you can imagine, those who were in the house are very distraught as well as the victim’s extended family. “

Mr McQueen said the incident was a targeted attack, and the community does not need to be fearful.

“It is extremely concerning but this is a targeted attack, and is not something to be fearful of - obviously they will be alarmed, but this is a targeted attack.”

Earlier, several neighbours said they heard a loud bang before a car with a shattered rear windscreen fled the scene.

“I saw two people race up to the car with shovels, we heard them smash the windows and we just seen them race back and then he collapsed on the footpath,” a female neighbour said.

Broken glass lined the road near the home and a woman was heard yelling ‘he’s my brother’ before breaking down in tears at the scene.

Detectives and forensic teams combed the area for clues into the night.

A tent was set up outside the address as forensic officers continued their investigations on Sunday.

Four houses were taped off while Old Logan Rd remained closed to commuters.

Mr McQueen urged motorists or members of the community who may have been in the vicinity, especially those with dashcam footage travelling on Old Logan Road and the Ipswich Motorway to come forward.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said he arrived home shortly after the incident and was shocked to learn what had happened.

“My roommate told me he heard two gunshots,” the neighbour said.

“People were standing around on the street, the entrance to my house was blocked off, so I had to go around the back way so I knew something bad happened.”

Autopsy results are expected today or tomorrow.
