A millionaire investor and former law firm manager who did so well he retired in his 40s has spent the night in the watch-house for allegedly swearing when police pulled him over in his car in the early hours of the morning.

Peter Stanley Southgate, 42, from Gordon Park, appeared in Brisbane Arrest Court on Saturday morning on a charge of committing public nuisance and three charges of breaching his bail on other charges.

His lawyer Emma Higgins, from Robertson O’Gorman solicitors, told Acting Magistrate Simone Bain that her client likely had an addiction to drugs but contested the circumstances of the allegation of using “offensive language” toward police and she would be applying to the QPS for the body worn camera footage.

“He worked as a law practice manager for a number of years,” Ms Higgins said.

“The undertakings speak to him being a self-funded retiree, essentially he made some very good investments such that he has been able to effectively retire early,” she said.

He owns his architect-designed home in Gordon Park – purchased for $1.5m in 2021 – and lives by himself, Ms Higgins submitted.

She said that the three charges of breaching his bail conditions related to allegations he failed to report on bail, but that he obtained a medical certificate for March 25 to March 27 during a telehealth appointment on March 28.

Acting Magistrate Bain suggested that “perhaps alcohol is a problem”.

“It does not feature your honour, rather the suggestion from his history is drugs,” Ms Higgins responded.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Matt Kahler told the court that Southgate’s alleged “drug of choice” was ice.

Acting Magistrate Bain granted Southgate bail on condition that he live at his home and have a night curfew between 8pm and 6am.

He must also report on bail to Stafford police station, in Brisbane’s northern suburbs, four days a week, and see his doctor to get a referral to attend drug counsellor D and M Consultants in Annerley.

Southgate is already on Supreme Court bail which requires him to submit to urine analysis testing for the presence of drugs.

Ms Higgins said Southgate entered a guilty plea last week to breaching his bail by returning a positive swab sample due to drug use.

He will return to Brisbane Magistrates Court on April 24.
