The mother of NRL superstar Payne Haas has been moved to another jail and placed in a detention cell after a number of altercations with fellow inmates.
The Courier-Mail has been told Uiatu “Joan” Taufua - who is on remand while facing charges over the deaths of three people in a car crash - has been moved from Southern Queensland jail to Brisbane Women’s prison following an incident with other prisoners.
“Detectives from Corrective Services Investigation Unit are investigating an assault at a Spring Creek correctional centre on May 31,” a police spokeswoman said.
“Initial investigations indicate two women were assaulted and were treated onsite for minor injuries. Investigations remain ongoing.”
Once returning to Brisbane Women’s jail, Taufua is understood to have been involved in another incident with a female prisoner, while they were lining up for the phone.
Taufua was then placed into a detention cell at the jail, according to officers.
An officer said an argument broke out between Taufua and another prisoner as they waited in line.
“If in the DU, they have non-powered cells with no TV or radio. There are some cells which allow access to a TV if the prisoner is approved to have TV access.”
A Queensland Corrective Services spokesperson said it was a matter for the Queensland Police Service when approached for comment.
Taufua has been on remand since last year.
Police Allege Taufua fled from a police patrol car on December 30 before allegedly veering onto the wrong side of the road at high speed and crashing into an oncoming vehicle on the Gold Coast hinterland.
Chris Fawcett, his partner Susan Zimmer and her daughter Steffie were in the other vehicle and died at the scene.
Taufua, who was the crash’s sole survivor, has been charged with manslaughter, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evade police and unlicensed driving.
A charge of mid-range drink driving was added at a subsequent court appearance in March.
She is due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on September 14.
