The mother of NRL superstar Payne Haas is now called “mum” by other prisoners and has become extremely fit in jail, officers say.
The Courier-Mail has been told Uiatu “Joan” Taufua, who is on remand while facing charges over the deaths of three people in a car crash, has lost considerable weight while awaiting the court process.
She was placed in a detention unit cell for incidents with other female prisoners and has now signed a “management plan”.
Prisoners are placed into the special detention cells after they have been “breached” for bad behaviour or who are facing other discipline matters.
“She continues to thumb her nose at rules and officers,” a prison officer told The Courier-Mail.
“The other inmates refer to her as ‘mum’.
“She’s lost a lot of weight and is fit. I’d say she has lost more than 20kg.
“It’s her way or the highway.”
The officer said Taufua’s remand cell is like “Aladdin’s Cave” and that she had plenty of funds to buy whatever she wanted in “buy ups” at the jail canteen.
“She’s on a management plan but continues to progress along despite being a smart arse and being disobedient to staff at times,” the officer said.
“She has to comply with set guidelines of behaviours to progress to the next level of the plan. If she doesn’t she remains of that level.
“Rules include appropriate levels of behaviour towards inmates and staff. As she reaches the next level the time she’s allowed out of her cell and also interactions with others will increase.
“Access to education courses are part of these plans.”
Taufua has been on remand since December 2022.
Police Allege Taufua fled from a police patrol car on December 30 before crashing into an oncoming vehicle on the Gold Coast hinterland.
Chris Fawcett, his former partner Susan Zimmer and her daughter Steffie were in the other vehicle and died.
Taufua has been charged with manslaughter, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evade police and unlicensed driving.
Her case is set to proceed to a committal hearing later this month.
