A man shot dead by police in Ipswich on Sunday afternoon has been identified as father-of-three Tjay Robert Doeblien.

Colette-lee Wilson, Doeblien’s former partner, said his family and friends will “have to live with the consequences of his actions yesterday”.

“He would not have shot at the police or the community, he would have been frightened and raised the gun that had no ammunition in it,” she said.

“He wouldn’t have wanted to go back to jail, he had a good job, family that absolutely loved him and left behind three children Dakota, Alexa and Bentley. He was a good person, just made the wrong choice in this moment.”

Ms Wilson said Doeblien was a “good hearted boy – the son of a good family, with three sisters and two brothers, also extended relatives and friends who are devastated at the loss of his life.”

“He was my partner. I’ve spent years growing with and learning more and more about each day … we separated not too long ago,” she said.

Ms Wilson said Doeblien recently found a new partner.

“He was a good hearted boy. People are quick to judge a situation that they know nothing about. My boy was just dealing with mental health issues – always thinking he was never good enough.”

A man who worked with Doeblien on a job site for six months, said he was the “happiest bloke” despite everything going on in his life.

He said Doeblien’s mother had passed away from cancer a week ago but he came to work the next day and was seeking help.

“That would take a toll on any bloke ... The system failed him,” he said.

“He was my mate, he was my brother. He didn’t deserve this. The system pretty much said ‘nup’ to helping him because he looked like a criminal.”
