‘No excuse to be silly’: Qld revellers urged to ring in 2022 safely

While Queensland has very few restrictions for the fully vaccinated this New Year’s Eve – revellers are being urged to play it safe and stay clear of the midnight kiss.

Queensland revellers are expected to turn out in droves for New Year’s Eve celebrations – the most normal since the pandemic began – despite soaring COVID-19 cases.

While New Year celebrations across the country are being stripped back or canned altogether in a bid to stop the spread of Omicron – Queensland’s ticketed events are mostly sold out.

One venue employee told the Courier Mail that they were surprised there had been few cancellations amid the Covid-surge but said people had been “much more cautious”, calling to find out what restrictions will be in place and how full the venue would be.

Fireworks will light up the sky as Queenslanders ring in 2022.

One of the biggest crowd-drawers will be the Lord Mayor’s New Year’s Eve fireworks at South Bank Parklands – a 10-minute extravaganza with more than 60,000 pyrotechnics.

Those attending won’t have to be vaccinated, however everyone will be required to check in via the Check In Queensland app.

Police Minister Mark Ryan urged Queenslanders to socially distance where possible, use the check in app and stay home if they feel unwell.

“Most people will want to see the back of 2021 and look forward to 2022 with great hope and excitement for the new year,” Mr Ryan said.

“But just because there’s time to celebrate doesn’t mean it’s an excuse to go out and be silly.

“So I’m pleading with people, if you’re not feeling well you shouldn’t be out celebrating New Year’s Eve tonight.

“If you’re going to be out and about please practise all of those important Covid-19 precautions that Queenslanders have been so good at doing.”

CAN

– Attend outdoor public events and firework displays if you are not vaccinated

– Have up to 100 guests at your house for New Year’s Eve celebrations

– Restaurants, clubs, pubs and cafes can all operate at full capacity if no unvaccinated patrons

CAN’T

– Go to licensed venues, clubs, pubs and cafes if you are unvaccinated

SHOULD

– Avoid hugs, kisses and handshakes wherever possible

– Keep at least 1.5 metres away (two big steps) from people you don’t live with

– Remember that if you spend more than four hours with someone you will be considered a close contact if they test positive
