CCTV linked to death of Crystal Beale

Detectives investigating the murder of Crystal Beale have released CCTV footage of people walking in South Brisbane as part of an appeal for people to come forward to talk to police.

Ms Beale, 49, was found in the Brisbane River at Yeronga about 5.40am on February 22.

The Sunshine Coast woman had been to dinner with family and a former partner the night before.

Police initially said her death of the mother was non-suspicious but later said they believed she was killed.

Crystal had been to dinner with family and her ex partner in Sunnybank and after the dinner she travelled to West End.

Police today have appealed for anyone who was near the Brisbane River at Orleigh Park or on Ryan St, West End, late on Friday, February 21, to come forward.

Footage released by police shows two people walking along Ryan St.

“Police are yet to identify the two people and encourage them to come forward, they are not believed to be involved in the alleged murder,” police said in a statement.

Ms Beale was last seen at a Sunnybank restaurant.

“The footage also captures multiple people riding scooters and bicycles or driving vehicles along Hill End Terrace, West End, towards Forbes Street. Investigators are appealing for these individuals to come forward as they may have information.

“A number of people were fishing at the jetty near Orleigh park on the night of Friday, February 21 who may have travelled to the location in vehicles. Investigators encourage those people fishing in the area to come forward as they may have information.”

In the first appeal after her death, detective acting Inspector Rod Watts said a post-mortem investigation hadn’t identified a cause of death. But he said police did not believe she died under natural circumstances.

Insp Watts said Ms Beale, a mother of two, had been visiting family in the West End area.

“She was visiting family, and we believe where she’s left, she left a man known to her, and that’s where she’s gone missing, and that’s what we’re trying to piece together,” he said.

The man was her former partner who is the father of one of her children.

“He’s one of a number of lines of inquiry that we’re following through. We haven’t arrested anyone,” Insp Watts said.

On Friday in a fresh appeal, Insp Watts urged anyone with any sort of information relating to Ms Beale to come forward.

“Investigations of this nature are complex, and every detail matters. Detectives appealing to anyone who may have been in this area between 9.30pm on Friday February 21 and 1am the following morning and saw Crystal or any suspicious behaviour,” he said.

“We believe Crystal was near the Brisbane River at Orleigh Park, West End and on Ryan Street, West End late on Friday February 21. She was wearing a long slim fitting white dress and had a brown leather shoulder satchel across her body.

“We understand that there were people fishing in the area and we are asking them to come forward and speak to police. They are in no way in trouble, we believe they may have vital information that could assist us in seeking answers for Crystal’s family.

“The investigative team continues to work around the clock on this matter and appeal to the community to assist us with any information they may have, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they think it is.”
