A man has been charged with murder after a body was found in Brisbane following an alleged altercation.
Police were called to a unit in Vine Street Stones Corner about 1am Friday for a welfare check and discovered a 61-year-old man dead inside the unit.
A 40-year-old Sunshine Coast man has been charged with one count of murder and will appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday.
Investigators believe the death occurred as a result of an alleged altercation in the unit around 10pm on the previous Friday, August 9.
It will be alleged the two men are known to each other. The accused was arrested on the Sunshine Coast just after midnight last night.
Lisa Dennis, a resident of Knowsley Lodge, and neighbour to the deceased, said that she and some fellow residents were woken on Friday night by noises.
“I heard people trying to get into the unit on the third floor … and then we all sort of came out because we got woken up, and some brave person goes, ‘are you trying to break into that unit?’ and the police go, ‘no. It’s us, the police. We’re doing a welfare check.”
Ms Dennis said after they spoke to the police, she and the other residents went back to bed, only to find out on Saturday morning that the man who lived in the unit had allegedly been murdered.
She said she didn’t know the man well because they didn’t get along.
Despite her feelings towards the deceased, she said she was upset to hear of the death.
“I feel really sad, because you don’t know what the person might’ve achieved,” she said.
Ms Dennis also recalled a series of incidents occurring at that particular apartment.
Ms Dennis said that, in “communities like this”, there are many “strange people.”
“We’ve all got a story,” she said.
“And when you hear stuff, you ignore it. If it’s not your business, you just ignore it.
“It’s one of those sorts of places.”
Ms Dennis said she felt happy to have to police attending the scene.
“They’ve been so good. They’ve just been so good about everything, and so willing to talk to us,” she said.
She also said that she’s never felt worried when incidents have taken place at Knowsley Lodge because she keeps to herself.
“I mind my own business,” she said.
A crime scene is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time or who may have information which could assist with investigations is urged to contact police.
