A police officer was taken to hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a glass bottle was allegedly thrown at him in Mt Isa, leaving him with a serious cut to his face.

Police allege that the bottle was thrown by a 29-year-old Pioneer man when a marked police patrol car pulled over to talk to a group of people on Abel Smith Parade around 3am Tuesday.

The man, who was not a part of that group, approached the stationary police car and, without warning, allegedly threw a bottle of alcohol through an open window, shattering when it hit the sergeant’s head.

The officer was transported to hospital and his forehead stitched. He has since been discharged.

Fragments from the bottle also hit a second officer, leaving him with cuts to the hand.

The 29-year-old man that police say is responsible fled the scene on foot and was found hiding under a vehicle in the backyard of a Abel Smith Parade address a short time later.

He has been charged with two counts of serous assault police with a circumstance of aggravation and was denied police bail.

He was remanded into custody after facing the Mt Isa Magistrates Court this morning.

The man will reappear before the magistrate on July 15.
