The mother of a woman who was murdered on a beach north of Cairns four years ago has spoken of her grief as international authorities search for the main suspect.

Formal extradition request sent to India over murder of Toyah Cordingley

A request to extradite a suspect in the 2018 murder of 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley from India has come to a standstill more than a year on from when it was actioned.

On Sunday night, the Australian Attorney-General’s Department confirmed that the extradition request signed in March 2021 has been adjourned as Indian authorities continue to make inquiries about the suspect’s whereabouts.

“It is now a matter for Indian authorities to progress the request,” a spokesman told the Cairns Post.

“This matter remains a high priority for the Australian Government, and we will continue to engage with Indian authorities regarding the matter.”

Toyah Cordingley was reported missing after she never returned from walking her dog at Wangetti Beach, 42 kilometres north of Cairns on October 21, 2018.

The person of interest, nurse Rajwinder Singh lived in Innisfail at the time and is believed to have fled to India on that same day.

A move to prosecute Mr Singh was made in December 2019 by the Queensland Director of Public Prosecutions putting in motion the extradition effort which was requested four months later.

Toyah Cordingley‘s mother Vanessa Gardiner has opened up about the gruelling wait for justice almost four years after her daughter’s death.

“Having the knock on the door from my son that night saying she was missing, never leaves, I still dream about that,” Ms Gardiner told 9 News.

The young woman’s dead body was discovered on Wangetti Beach by her father Troy Cordingley the day after she went missing.

“It’s very difficult, I cry every time I go past because she should still be here,” she said.

Still no charges have been laid since the 24-year-old’s sudden death.

“That person is still living his life, she had many years left.”

The Australian Attorney-General’s Department has been contacted for comment.
