Two Brisbane men have faced Brisbane Magistrates Court after a drunken misadventure that led them to the top of Brisbane’s Story Bridge.
Andrew William Deshon, 23, and Brodie Ray Woodward, 22, pleaded guilty to one count each of unregulated high-risk activities.
Prosecutor Sgt David Parfitt told the court police were alerted to the incident at 5.40am on April 17, saying officers located the men at the “highest point in the northeast and pedestrian walkway bridge”.
They gained access to the bridge by climbing a pillar, the court heard.
Fire crews were called to the bridge and worked for 90 minutes to bring the men down the bridge and back to safety.
Traffic was impacted, with one of the southbound lanes was obstructed.
The defendants’ lawyer Hugh Stitt, from Hannay Lawyers, told the court the pair had a “lapse in judgment”.
“They are both incredibly remorseful and embarrassed,” Mr Stitt said.
The men attended a Brisbane private school with one as the school vice-captain and have both recently completed their electrical apprenticeship.
Magistrate Anne Thacker said the Story Bridge has clear signs warning people not to climb it.
“Everyone knows, including you, you must know the structure of the Story Bridge has changed over the years to be so far more protected than it’s ever been,” Ms Thacker said.
“Given your background, your education, your employment, all of the positive things about your lives, your physical fitness, you should be showing leadership”.
Ms Thacker said the men were drunk and not thinking.
Ms Thacker placed the men on a six-month $1000 good behaviour bond.
No convictions were recorded.
