A man fatally shot by police overnight was holding a woman hostage at knifepoint when police arrived on scene, Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll has confirmed.

A 32-year-old Kedron man died after being shot by police multiple times after he lunged at them with a knife during an incident in the car park of a McDonald’s in Marsden.

Ms Carroll said police were called after “multiple calls” were made from the public about the man threatening staff at McDonald’s.

Ms Carroll said a female employee was held as hostage at knifepoint when police arrived on scene.

“Police called on this person numerous times, numerous times to put down the knife,” she said.

“When he came at police, obviously police took action.

“Knives can be just as dangerous as guns.”

Ms Carroll said the Ethical Standards Command would be investigating the shooting.

Shocking footage emerged on Friday nightof the man being shot by police.

Police officers with guns drawn can be heard shouting at the man repeatedly to drop the knife.

The man advanced towards the officers and one can be heard yelling “get on the ground” before multiple shots are fired.

And in new video footage seen by The Courier-Mail, the shirtless man can be heard yelling at police as they try to negotiate with him.

“That’s not even a proper gun,” he yells at officers.

“F--k off, you don’t even have a f--king badge...f--k off, I did nothing wrong.”

Police attempt to taser the man, but as he continues to walk towards two officers with a knife raised, five shots are fired.

Queensland Police confirmed that before taking a hostage in McDonald’s, the knifeman had threatened staff in two other stores and attempted to rob another business.

A police spokeswoman also confirmed the man was previously known to police.

A witness reported the man was earlier wielding a knife inside the McDonald’s restaurant and demanding cash from one of the registers.

The witness said McDonald’s employees were unable to open the register, which enraged the man.

He reportedly then took the knife and held it to a female employees neck, screaming at other employees to get away from him.

A statement from the Queensland Police Service said officers responded to a disturbance at the shopping centre on Chambers Flat Rd at 4.45pm.

“He was transported to Logan Hospital with serious injuries, in a critical condition,” police said.

“There is no ongoing threat to the community and no-one else has been injured.

“No further information is available at this time.”

It was later confirmed the man had died from his injuries.

Multiple forensics teams set up tents in the McDonald’s car park on Friday night, with a police spokesperson saying the forensics teams would remain on site “for hours”.

Acting Chief Superintendent Mel Adams, the Logan District Officer, confirmed police were called to the incident about 4.30pm on Friday after receiving multiple calls that a man armed with a knife was threatening people at the Marsden Park Shopping Centre.

“Police attended that location and found an armed man at the McDonald’s at Marsden on Chambers Flat Rd,” Acting Chief Superintendent Adams said.

“Police attempted to negotiate with that person but that person ran at police.”

She said officers tried to stop the man by using a taser device but were unsuccessful. He was then shot multiple times.

“Police attempted to stop the man with a taser deployment. That taser deployment failed, and police were subsequently forced to use their firearm to stop the threat,” Superintendent Adams said.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics attended the scene and took the man to hospital with critical injuries, where he later died.

Police say their investigations are still at a “very early” stage, as they try to find out the man’s identity and notify his next of kin.

Witnesses to the event have been urged to contact police and share any relevant footage with them.

Police were unable to confirm if the man had held a McDonald’s employee hostage during the incident or what his intentions were inside the restaurant.

“It’s too early to make comment on any specific parts of this investigation,” Superintendent Adams said.

“Our investigations will work on any footage that is available. It is quite a complex scene with multiple people who witnessed the event and multiple officers on site.

“It’s very traumatic circumstances for our people. Nobody goes to work thinking they are going to harm another person.

“This is something that will take some time for (the officers) to get through.”

The investigation will be reviewed by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

McDonald’s have since released a statement confirming no crew or customers were harmed during the incident.

“Crew involved have been offered support and we are assisting the police,” the statement said.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said all police acted appropriately and professionally and that it was lucky a member of the public taken hostage was not seriously injured or killed.

“The QPU and our lawyers were on the scene immediately to assist all police involved,” he said.

“We undertook interviews with police and gave assistance all through Friday night and through to 3pm Saturday.

“All police involved acted appropriately, professionally and with the sole purpose of keeping the public safe.

“I applaud the quick thinking actions of police.

“We are lucky that a member of the public taken hostage was not seriously injured or killed.”

Mr Leavers said he congratulated the swift action of the police.

“And the QPU will now assist these police into the future because any time an officer is forced to use their firearm by a dangerous, violent, and armed offender, it can take a tremendous psychological toll when all the police are doing is trying to keep the community safe,” he said.
