Man jailed for assault on child in wheelchair, burglary of sex shop

A man who assaulted a disabled 10-year-old child in his wheelchair at a major Brisbane shopping centre has been jailed.

A man who seriously assaulted a disabled child in a wheelchair by violently shaking him and berating him for his condition has been jailed.

Carl Vincent Carsburg, 46, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court for seriously assaulting a disabled 10-year-old boy as well as burglary at a sex shop where he allegedly put a police dog in a chokehold.

Carsburg, who has schizophrenia, was intoxicated when he approached the child with cerebral palsy and his carer at the Chermside Shopping Centre in October 2020 and began shaking his foot for about 40 seconds.

Magistrate Anthony Gett said Carsburg showed “total disregard for that young boy‘s welfare”.

“You have come upon them, it appears you were intoxicated, you have then grabbed the child by the foot while the child was in the wheelchair and you shook his foot without his permission or authority,” Magistrate Gett said.

“You started, indignantly I must say, asking if he can see, feel or hear any of his senses, you became aggressive and started swearing at the child and shaking the child’s foot.”

Carsburg then began to swear at the boy, calling him a ‘c--t’ and ‘f---ing mongrel’.

Just a few months later, on February 5, 2021, Carsburg smashed through a window of the Totally Adult sex store in Aspley.

Defence Lawyer Shane McDowell said Carsburg had his arm through the smashed window and was grabbing anything he could reach.

“The properties stolen, or found in his possession, being rectal toys, nipple clamps, a silk robe, lubricant, and a purple sheet,” Mr McDowell said.

“These are thefts of a person who is looking at getting whatever property he can find, as opposed to having any use for that himself.”

Police will allege Carsburg put police dog Rocco in chokehold before he was arrested.

He is awaiting court proceedings for allegedly injuring a police dog.

Carsburg was sentenced to 19 months’ jail and will be eligible for parole on July 3, 2021.

The next mention for Carsburg’s charge for injuring a police dog will be heard in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 21.
