A man is in custody after allegedly driving a stolen meat truck dangerously from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane, crashing into multiple cars and then into a home on Brisbane’s southeast.
The man was arrested outside a Newnham Rd home in Mansfield just after 6.30pm on Monday.
He has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, robbery with violence, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and three counts each of stealing and possession of dangerous drugs.
He is expected to appear in Cleveland Magistrates Court today.
Police allege the man damaged multiple vehicles across Brisbane throughout the late afternoon, centred on the Pacific Motorway in the vicinity of Woolloongabba and Holland Park.
The meat truck, which was tracked by police patrols and Polair, eventually came to rest in Mansfield when police allege the man crashed it into the rear deck of a home and ran from officers, who swiftly arrested him without incident.
A load of meat products from Fresh Meats in Maroochydore was last night removed, with a worker on scene to recover it.
Regional Duty Officer Inspector Karl Hahne said that about 4.30pm on Monday, police became aware of the truck that had been reported stolen from the Sunshine Coast.
“Police units, assisted by Polair, tracked that vehicle heading south from the Sunshine Coast area,” he said.
Inspector Hahne said that about 45 minutes later, the truck entered north Brisbane, where it continued to drive erratically, with Polair continuing to track it through the suburbs.
He said the truck came in contact with a number of vehicles.
“Luckily at this stage we’ve had no reports of injury from the public,” he said.
Inspector Hahne said police had one male in custody who was being questioned over a number of driving offences.
“I understand that the truck came to rest where it was behind me and the driver had a short foot pursuit,” he said.
Inspector Hahne said police urged anyone with footage to come forward.
Mansfield homeowner Bruce Schoobridge said: “I was a little p-ssed off after seeing what was going on in the corner of my deck and the back end of my house,” he said.
“What I gather is that (the driver) crawled out of the truck and the police caught him on my front yard.
“The police came after him.
“That sort of excitement I really (didn’t) need.”
Mr Schoobridge said he felt fortunate that the truck didn’t run through the house.
